To get a contractors’ license in the state of California you must first pass the California Contractors’ License Exam. The exam consists of over 100 questions on a variety of topics related to laws and regulations of the State of California. Remember that within California, the state rules are the minimum standards and local governing bodies may impose additional rules on the contractor.
The California Contractors’ License Examination is structured as a series of multiple choice questions presented on a computer. Because the test is given by computer, the questions that you are asked can be drawn from a bank of thousands of questions. If you fail the test and need to take it a second time, it is quite likely that you will see different questions than those that were asked the first time around. This helps to maintain the integrity of the test and ensure that test takers have a thorough understanding of the material in order to pass.
According to Peerless Institute, a leading Contractors’ Licensing Course provider, the exam is broken down this way:
- 14% of the exam questions relate to Business Practices
- 13% of the exam questions relate to Bid Preparation
- 15% of exam questions relate to Contracts
- 19% of exam questions relate to Contract Operations
- 8% of exam questions relate to Safety issues
- 13% of exam questions relate to Labor issues
- 13% of exam questions relate to Legal issues
- The remainder of the exam questions may be on various related topics
Because of the large number of possible questions that you may encounter on the test, trying to memorize the answers by rote is not an ideal method of preparation for the contractors’ license test. However, it is important to familiarize yourself with the manner in which the questions will be presented. Practice tests not only help you to prepare for the phrasing and type of questions that you’ll find on the actual exam, but they also give you a very accurate reading of your ability to pass the exam. If you are consistently scoring 95% correct answers on the practice tests, you are probably very well prepared to pass the exam. On the other hand, if you are struggling to complete the practice tests within the allotted time or are getting a high percentage of the answers wrong, then you need additional study before attempting the exam.
